"I felt nervous at first but talking things through really helped me to understand....."

Firstly, we are all different and your counselling experience will be unique to you. Your first session will be a time to discuss what you need from counselling and how best I can offer that to you.

If counselling is something you have never experienced before you may be wondering what to expect. It could be that you have a specific difficulty that you would like to talk about, or you may not know what it is about, but are just finding life complicated or stressful right now. Often, the main presenting problem may lead on to other things as the therapy develops.
Some people find it difficult to talk about their problems at first and it is important to know that all sessions will be led by you and that you will go at your own pace and find your own way.

Confidentiality

Counselling is strictly confidential and what is discussed between the counsellor and the client is treated with respect and discretion. Only in very specific circumstances, which are made clear and agreed during the initial session, would any information ever be made available to anyone else.

How long are the sessions?

Sessions last for 50 minutes and are usually once a week at the same time each week.

How long does counselling go on for?

There are no hard and fast rules. Sometimes brief solution focused therapy may be what is needed and will only require six to eight sessions. Other times, as the therapy progresses, it may become apparent that a longer time frame is needed. We will work together and ensure that we review our work often.

How will it end?

It is beneficial to the counselling process to have a planned ending so usually a date is agreed between us at some point during the work. Sometimes people choose to gradually reduce sessions by having them less frequently but still at regular intervals. Again, you will know what is best for you when the time comes.
